Word-of-mouth Marketing

Definition

A marketing method based on informal social interactions to promote a product.

Information

This method was introduced before the advent of the Internet and is widely touted as the most effective form of marketing. A person is more likely to believe something that comes from someone they know or respect than a standard source such as advertisements and print advertisements.

The traditional publicity campaign for the concert tour involved handing out flyers, making television commercials and placing print advertisements in newspapers. However, word of mouth has become even more powerful with the advent of online social networks. To give a good example, night channel Conan O'Brien was able to sell out ALL tickets to ALL of its locations with just one tweet. It was later retweeted on Twitter and shared on other social media. The concert tour took place in mid-2010, just weeks after he was fired from NBC. Word of the Conan OBrien brand spread like wildfire and it only took 140 well-designed characters to make it happen.
