Why does the pilot light go out when the furnace is running?

Why does the pilot light go out when the furnace is running? Every time the furnace fires up, it blows out the pilot light. Sometimes it will run a full cycle and blow out when it shuts down, and sometimes it will blow out about a minute into the cycle.

What causes a pilot light to blow out?

Common problems with traditional standing pilot lights Pilot light blows out. The most common and well-known problem with pilot lights is that the flame can blow out. Pilot light burns inefficiently. The flames from traditional pilot lights should burn a bright blue color. Dirt builds up on the intake valve.

Why is my pilot light burning an orange color?

If your pilot light’s flame is orange or yellow, it is burning inefficiently due to a lack of oxygen. The thermocouple should sense when this happens because the heat from the flame will not be as hot as it should be. If you notice that your pilot light’s flame is burning a color other than blue, contact Hyde’s so that we can fix the problem.

What should I do if my pilot light is too low?

Observe the flame. If the flame appears to be too small or sputters on and off, then the simple solution would be to adjust the size of the flame using a screw that you will see on the pilot light. Turn that screw counter-clockwise, and the flame should grow. Do this if you believe your flame is too low.

Why does the pilot light on my furnace keep going out?

The thermocouple is the copper rod the pilot flame directly hits. Sometimes it’s referred to as the “flame sensor.” It’s a safety mechanism that shuts the gas off should the pilot go out. If the thermocouple fails to shut off the gas, all the gas flowing through the furnace could get into your home.

Why does my pilot light start to burn?

Dirt builds up on the intake valve. One of the reasons why a pilot light can start to burn inefficiently is that dirt can build up on its gas intake valve. When this happens, the flame’s oxygen supply will be restricted.

Why is the pilot light on my water heater not working?

One other thermocouple issue – make sure (after turning gas valve to PILOT and removing cover plate) that the thermocouple is not buried in rust – that can affect the temperature that it sees and cause it to not work correctly.

What should I do if my pilot light keeps going out?

Before purchasing a new thermocouple a check of the gas line to the pilot assembly should be done. In a few cases debris got trapped in the gas line and blocked the gas. Cleaning the tubing by blowing through it should clean all the debris from the line. The pilot assembly, pilot nozzle, and even the thermocouple should be clean.
