Unsubscribe Rate

Unsubscribe rate is a metric that shows the percentage of users who unsubscribe from a mailing list in an email marketing campaign. Unsubscribes will destroy your email list because uninterested prospects stop communicating, but a high unsubscribe rate (usually >0.5%) indicates problems with your email marketing strategy.

The unsubscribe rate is measured by dividing the number of unsubscribes by the number of successful email sends multiplied by 100 (number of unsubscribes/successful deliveries x 100 = unsubscribe rate). This metric, along with others like open rate and click rate, allows you to understand how prospects are interacting with your email marketing and adjust your strategy.

According to numerous studies in recent years, the average bounce rate of emails is around 0.1%. This means that for every 1,000 emails sent, you can expect one person to unsubscribe. It also means that every time you send 1000 emails, you must have more than one new subscriber or else your mailing list will start to shrink.

This 0.1% figure is a common measure of all emails across all industries. However, the benchmark for various industries ranges from about 0.1% to 0.8%. As you can see, the churn rate for any industry is usually well below 1%. So if you see the churn rate even approaching 1%, then you should be concerned.
