How does the igniter work on a gas stove?
Gas stove burners have igniters that spark when activated with a knob; this spark mixes with gas from the appliance to create a hot burner for cooking. However, the igniters on the gas stove can malfunction, preventing the burners from activating.
Why does my stovetop burner not ignite?
Most ignition-related issues are because the burner head gets clogged after cleaning or after spillovers. If the cooktop or burners were recently cleaned, there could be moisture in the burner head ignition port (hole) and flame ports. The burner will continuously click and will not ignite until the ports are clear and the burner dries out.
Why does my gas range take so long to ignite?
After cleaning the burner heads and caps, shake out excess water and let them dry out thoroughly by air drying or by setting them in a warm oven for 30 minutes. Once dry, replace the burner heads and caps to their correct position, plug in the unit and try lighting the burners again. It can take up to 10 or 12 clicks to ignite a burner.
What’s the best way to troubleshoot an oven igniter?
Insert a needle into the hole. Gently and carefully sweep the needle around the hole to remove any buildup and gunk that is keeping the gas from coming out. Check the igniter for sparks. Turn the gas off and hit the ignition button on your stove. This is generally accompanied by a clicking nose as the electric igniter sparks to light the gas.

What happens when a gas burner is opened?
If the gas valve opens and sends gas through the burners but actual ignition is delayed, gas accumulates, then ignites with an explosion when the spark finally occurs.
